About this training:
This two-day in depth workshop with look at working with Self Harm, Suicide and risk to others through a TA and Object Relations lens.
At the start of my career, whilst working in a high-risk dangerous offenders’ unit I was struck by how many of my clients had either committed serious harm to others or to self. Later as a trainee psychotherapist I began to wonder why do some people consider suicide and others do not? Why some people seriously harm others and some do not. And how to work with such clients beyond risk management and safety plans. There is a great deal written in the literature about risk of harm to self and others and the causes, with the vast majority of data coming from correlational studies.
In this workshop we will go beyond the statistics and explore how harm to self and others are based on ‘early decisions’ and is an action both for the self and against it. How it can be understood as an attempt to save the self, but that in turn destroys the body or the other. Substantial time will be given in the workshop to exploring how to work psychologically and ‘contractually’ with such presenting risks so it is no longer considered an option by the client. The workshop is presented through a Transactional Analysis and Object relations lens. Knowledge of these modalities/theories are not a pre-requisite of the workshop as time will be spent building the ideas over the course of the two-day workshop, with opportunity to practice and implement the approach and skills needed.

Deborah is a UKCP registered Clinical Psychotherapist, Supervisor and Trainer. She holds a MSc in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy and is a Certified Transactional Analyst, undertaking her Masters at the Metanoia Institute London in the mid 1990’s.She is endorsed by the European Association of Transactional Analysts as a (Provisional) Training and Supervising Transactional Analysis (P) and is passionate about training and supervising others wanting to develop their interest in this area at whatever level. Deborah has worked in a variety of therapeutic settings, including the NHS and for 26 years in a Forensic setting facilitating therapeutic groups. She also manages a private psychotherapy practice in Derbyshire, working with individuals, couples, and groups.
